ON THE ROAD: ICELAND

Photographs by @lindsbanan & @menawill

Have you ever known you were meant to be in a certain place? Or felt an indescribable pull to a destination you have never been? That is how I felt about Iceland.  I have been daydreaming about Iceland and the prospect of seeing the Aurora Borealis with my own eyes  for years without any real research.  After spending hours searching pinterest and Instagrams many 'Iceland' hashtags, it was clear something was pulling on my heart so I had no choice but to follow my gut. As a result of my research I learnt that in order to get the true Icelandic experience, with the added ease of getting around, one must travel in summer for the beauty of the midnight sun and temperatures above 0.  Sold. I booked my flight for July 2014 and even though my chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis were slim due to the lack of true night, it was time.

Leading up to the trip I had been focusing on the concept of right timing – letting things unfold as they will and being surprised and delighted at how perfect the Universe can be. After boarding the overnight plane to Reykjavik, I turned to look out my window and right there in front of me the green lights of the Aurora Borealis danced across the sky - pretty sensational  in-flight entertainment. Everything felt right. It was confirmed, the Universe had some glorious tricks up its sleeve for me and my gypsy travel companion.

Iceland is, hands down, the most beautiful country I have ever laid eyes on. The vistas are extraordinary and so varied, showcasing lush green fields, waterfalls around every corner, snow-capped mountains, lava fields, geothermal rivers, steep cliffs reaching out over the ocean, canyons, valleys, icebergs, and so much more.

We spent our first day exploring Rejykavik and witnessed our first midnight sun that night before heading over to rent what would become our home for the next 4 days - a little Nissan Micra hatchback. We made a quick pit stop at Ikea to make our stay more comfortable and began our journey.. We drove north and realized that our guide book had been left behind. We were fending for ourselves, which fit perfectly into my right timing mindset. We stopped at a horse farm and bonded with some of the most beautiful animals I have ever seen, their hair was magnificent blowing in the wind.

The first waterfall we found demanded a stop. We pulled over, climbed to the top, climbed back down and continued further into the north towards the West Fjords. The roads turned into winding cliffs that dropped straight into the ocean.
After hours in the car, our achy bodies were yearning for some relief -  step in Universe - not 5 minutes later, geothermal community pools appeared before us overlooking the ocean. What a wonderful way to relax and reflect before curling up on a cliff under a waterfall by the ocean for bed.

The next day we debated waiting for the Museum of Witchcraft and Sorcery to open in Holmavik but decided it would be best to be on our way. We headed east and found ourselves amongst expansive canyons and interior rocky roads. Every turn brought something more beautiful than the last. We drove through the valley of the canyons (this was our name for it) and made it to Akureyri, the city in the North, to enjoy some local cuisine and live entertainment at a family festival. We decided it was only fitting to sleep next to Godafoss, the waterfall of the gods, which made waking up a surreal experience, especially because it was just us. Not another soul in sight.

Next stop: Detifoss. We didn’t account for the fact that it would take hours to get from one waterfall to the next based on the distractions along the way…  craters, volcanoes, steam rising majestically from the earth, an idyllic natural grotto, and a powerful geothermal pond.  We arrived at Detifoss, with a couple of hitchhikers in tow and were taken aback by its sheer force. It is the most powerful foss in Europe and it was truly incredible.  It is amazing to see that Iceland has not exploited it’s beauty, there is no cheesiness that surrounds these natural wonders - no big box restaurants, no casinos - nothing disrupts its beauty. The daylight lasts long so we were able to pack a lot in. We kept trucking until we found a spot to stop for dinner, that just happened to have a sweat lodge and a geothermal pool to soak in after supper. The restaurant is also a tannery and created handmade leather wares. At 11:30 pm the sun set casting magical fluffy pink clouds across the sky, tinting the snowcapped mountains with a rose glow. That, and a brief sighting of the Icelandic version of Channing Tatum made for the perfect end to the day.   That night we slept by the beach listening to the waves crashing on the black beach shore. This drive honestly felt as though we were in a movie, like The Neverending Story meets The Land Before Time.

We drove into a little sea town named Hofn, for a fresh and delicious breakfast before driving through lava fields on our way to  take in the magnificence of the Glaciers and Icebergs at Jökulsárlón. We felt privileged to be able to see these incredible earthly creations. The danger they are facing and the rate at which they are melting make it likely that generations to come will never get to see them with their own eyes. It was an indescribable experience and it was hard to tear ourselves away. Moving on we found our self at Skogafoss. This is probably one of the more famous foss's in Iceland but to be honest, we were fossed out. We were also hatchback hoteled out so we got a room and slept in a bed - it was wonderful.

Feeling rested and refreshed we made our way back to Reykjavik and returned our tiny home.  We found ourselves in the midst of a long weekend so we freshened up and headed out to dinner and as they say in Iceland we partied til the sun went down. Get it? It doesn't!

We saved the best for last and headed to the Blue Lagoon on our final day in Iceland. We indulged in water massages and ate a three course lunch in our lagoon robes before heading straight to the airport. With hearts full of gratitude, we boarded the flight home. Iceland was full of impeccable beauty, wonder, magic, twists and turns. Thank you Iceland for sharing your beauty and thank you universe for unfolding exactly as you should.

LABOUR (DAY) OF LOVE: PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY

image: lindsbanban

I have been very lucky in my life to have many rural sanctuaries, which have provided me the essential soul asylum from the mayhem of the city. When I was growing up it was the beach in Maine, the lake in Memphremagog, and the farm in Caledon, then came my parents earthly paradise on Lake Muskoka, but it wasn't until about four years ago that I earned my green card at my besties Mum's lake house in Prince Edward County. I am usually drawn to the most remote locales when escaping the hum of the neon lights. I almost always prefer rugged terrain and secret beaches to the prim and proper - choosing unwashed hair and a make-up free face and the quiet of nature. A hammock, my yoga mat, a fire and wide open waters is truly, all I need. And then there is the county and the bounty that it holds in it's soil, in it's people and on the shores of it's elusive beaches. It has now officially become tradition that I spend labour day at the lake house soaking up the last drops of summer with late morning coffees, long paddle boards, lazy afternoon naps, breathtaking sunsets, delicious wines, local produce, and fabulous company. This weekend was no exception. So as we all prepare to get back to our "routine" take a moment to look back and relish all your blissful summer moments had near and far, in parks and on beaches, in laughter and in light!
Every labour day weekend Vicki's Veggies hosts their annual
Heirloom Hurrah Tomato Tasting with over a 100 different tomatoes and so much more.
Local farmers bring their finest to compliment the 50 foot table of heirlooms.
My favourites this year: Jaune Flamme, Nebraska Wedding, Black Cherry.
We left with our fair share of bounty and headed home for an evening of Panzanella and county wine.
After Vicki's we headed over to County Cider to escape the humidity.
After a fleet of cider's, we settled on the County Classic Apple.
Light, refreshing, just the right amount of sweet and chilled to perfection.
Morning Yoga: My mat travels with me wherever I go.
This is one of my favourites places to practice alongside some of my favourite people.
There are few better ways to start the day.
image: normanhardie instagram

My three favourite selections from the man himself, Mr. Norman Hardie.
County Chardonnay, Calcaire and of course, the County Pinot Noir.
After an insanely busy weekend of tastings, pizzas and oysters, Norm's team
is gearing up for what promises to be yet another amazing harvest.
My happy place. Sky above, Water below, Fire within...

As summer comes to a slow, steamy end, close your eyes and relive your BEST moments - the smells, the tastes, the sounds and the laughter; the late nights, camping trips, and moments of pure bliss. Write it all down so you can revisit your words when the earth freezes over. Practice gratitude. After all, sweater weather is not so bad...

ON THE ROAD: SAN FRANCISCO TO NAPA VALLEY

Words & Photography by lindsbanban

This year my Dad turned a very special age. To celebrate, he decided he was going to take each of his children on a very special, once in a lifetime trip. Without hesitation, I was all in when he suggested a week long journey traversing California's Pacific Coast Highway aka Highway 1. First Stop: San Francisco

DAY 1:  To kick off my adventure I watched The Secret Life of Walter Mitty on the plane. This inspiring story of getting yourself out of a rut - recognizing that there is so much more out there – then, actually getting up and seizing it was a breath of fresh air. Whether you’re finding yourself, or re-discovering yourself, travelling opens your eyes to the unknown, it shows you what you are made of, or perhaps,  reminds you. I can't think of a better way to have started this adventure with my dad. To top it off the soundtrack is incredible, LISTEN WHILE YOU READ:

On our first full day in San Francisco we wander through The Mission, and get a feel for the city. When we find La Taqueria for cheap tacos, nachos, guacamole and beer, I decide, in that moment, to eat my way through San Francisco. My first taste of what can only be described as the epitome of San Fran came after driving up a steep road in Knob Hill and drop down towards the bay at golden hour. The light hit the sail boats and they glow as the fog settles in the air. Simply beautiful. Next, Fog City for a delicious dinner - hello local oysters and ahi tuna, and better yet? Delicious cocktails.  We had to seek out Humphrey Slocombe in The Mission for the most creative ice cream flavours I have ever heard of - I mean,  Secret Breakfast? Corn flakes and Bourbon? Nailed it.

DAY 2:  Wake up and head to the Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building. We are overwhelmed by the smell of fruits and veggies, flowers and best of all - lavender.  We stop into Blue Bottle Coffee for a quick caffeine fix and a breakfast made up of tasters of cheese at Cowgirl Creamery and meats at Boccalone - highlight: fennel salami - and all the other tasty treats on offer.  After, we head out to Napa Valley - stopping at The Buckeye Roadhouse for pulled pork and wedge salad - to stay with friends in their stunning home set to the breathtaking backdrop of wine country. As I write this, I can't stop thinking about how lucky I am to have a Dad who loves me and spoils me the way that mine does. Lucky right?! We head to Tra Vigne for dinner and order Mozzarella "al minute" - fresh mozzarella made to order - arrancini, organic lettuces salad and tuna pasta with black noodles accompanied by rare glasses of Châteauneuf wines. Unbelievable. This is the dreamiest patio I have ever seen.

DAY 3:  We take an early morning hot air balloon ride over Napa valley. Soaking in the most breathtaking views as we sail through the sky. This is my thank you gift to my dad for our time away together. I was hoping it would be special and was I ever right!  For dinner we went to Mustard's Grill, the quintessential California grill.

DAY 4:  We spend the day going to vineyards in the area. Mondavi is just gorgeous. Every aspect has been thought about in regards to aesthetics. We go to Robert Sinsky and try a Pinot noir rose. Next, Silverado, where we are offered their tasting fleet and a host of tasty rare extras. At Oxbow Market we eat delicious tacos and black beans and then onto the next incredible tasting fleet with Arthur at Napa Valley Distillery. Vodka made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, limited edition plum brandy aged for 15 years, probably the best gin I have ever had, and on, and on....we stumble home to a gourmet home cooked meal. Spoiled.

DAY 5:  Driving out of Napa is bittersweet - but we couldn't miss a visit to the spectacular Muir Woods. The trees are ancient and huge. So much life! We have dinner at the Slanted Door - which had JUST received the James Beard award for outstanding restaurant in the country.  The menu is creative and delicious, the service is terrible. Honourable mentions: Ban nahm - interesting and incredible. The huge and local scallops were outstanding. The biggest most flavourful sugar snap peas I have ever tasted.

DAY 6:  Driving down the coast towards Big Sur is breathtaking. Stunning Cliff Sides, ocean roads, feet in the sand, incredible wealth along 17 Mile Drive. Beautiful lunch at Nepenthe. Dinner at Delfina is incredible - amazing service, delicious food, and noteworthy wine. Erica, our adorable waitress, is super friendly and knowledgeable. I have instant order envy when the most incredible calamari I have ever tasted arrives at our table in front of my dad with white beans so good we asked for the recipe. My choice of duck ragu homemade pasta made up for my bad starter order. And luckily we have a salmon poke bite that filled my seafood void.

DAY 7:  The only cloudy day and we are visiting Alcatraz. I am fascinated. It's crazy to think about life in prison on an island with a front row view of such an active, lively city. We hesitantly cancelled our reservations for Barbocco, due to a week of gluttony and opt for a light sushi dinner followed by an ETB (early to bed).  Side note: This was the day we were meant to check out the Tanner Household, but when I looked up the address and I saw it had been painted, we chose not to go - childhood dreams must remain as they are.

DAY 8:  We decide to join the rest of the city and bike the Golden Gate Bridge. It is challenging and remarkable. We ride down the hill and land in Sausalito for lunch on the water at a crab shack. Back to the city to freshen up for our 7 course tasting at Sons and Daughters. To say the service is perfection would be an understatement. The food is so thoughtfully created with local produce and game. The vegetables, fruits and herbs all come from their own garden - prepared with so much thought and attention. They are consumed that way as well. Cassandra, Nathan and Amy make sure we are well taken care of.

Packing up to leave is always sad. This week has been unforgettable, educational, gastronomic, and much needed. The best part? Spending QT with my amazing Father in what is now, not only his favourite city, but may be one of mine as well.
----------------------------------------------------
Missed Opportunity: the Food Truck Festival every Friday at the Fort Mason Centre. If I was in SF for another Friday you better believe this is where you would find me. We biked amongst the trucks as they were getting set up and I would have loved to have tasted many morsels from these mobile cuisine machines. Oh well, next time…

LISTEN: COSTA RICA SURF

In 2008 I lived in Costa Rica. This is what we listened to. Surfed to. Danced to. Made love to. Did Yoga to... and Floated to.
Dedicated to one of my greatest muses, inspirations, and soul sister, Chanti.

If you know Toronto in the Summer you know that we do three things really well:
Parks, Lakes, and Patios. Each one demands a well-curated playlist.
Based on the perfection of last weekend in the Park, this playlist will not disappoint,
especially if you're simply sitting, sipping and sunning in Bellwoods.

LESSONS FROM THE MOUNTAINS: CATALUNYA, SPAIN

How was Spain?

Three simple words begging an inspirational response that motivates your listener to book a ticket and hop the next flight to Europe.

I surrender and give what has now become my go to answer "It was amazing". Three simple words - this time begging for elaboration.

Here's the catch, how do you elaborate on an intensely personally experience? The inquisition will never fully understand what you went through.
What you saw. What you smelt. It was yours. And secretly you want to keep it that way.
THAT is how I feel about my time in Spain. It's mine. And you can't have it.

What you can have is this.

Travel More.
Get out of your little box. There is nothing better in the world than a journey into a culture completely foreign to your own. No better cure for an inflated ego or a dwindling spirit. No better remedy to awaken your sleeping muse, artist, creator, lover and inner wise woman.
When you feel like you are being swallowed up by your day-to-day. Travel somewhere completely foreign.
When you are squabbling with your partner over the same silly little gripe. Travel somewhere together or even better, apart.

Travel feeds the soul. It reminds you of all the beauty within you and re-opens your eyes to the beauty and possibility all around you. It opens the door and creates space for what really matters, ushering out all the bullies and critics from within.

Amy and I, my soul sister, gracious host and savage gypsy, spent 10 days living together in a house built into the mountain side in Catalunya, Spain. That's right, a cave. There are not many ways to get closer to nature, than to literally penetrate it. Sleep in it. Sleep ON it. Sleep with it and literally feel its heart beating alongside your own. WIthout a soul for miles we danced our way through a week of meditation, yoga, silliness, culinary explorations and deep, subtle personal transformation.

Nature is Mother Earth's greatest remedy. It is where we came from and it is where we will return when we die. I remember when Amy and her husband first moved to their cave home. I remember her saying she could feel the energy of gratitude pulsing through her veins. The tremble in her hands wasn't fear. It was deep appreciation for the experience she was embarking upon.

People lament "how lucky she is" - but luck has no part in it. They made it happen. They worked hard. They saved. They planned. They sacrificed. They left family, friends, hairdryers and washing machines at home. They designed a life most of us say is impossible. Are they living THE dream? Absolutely not. They are living THEIR dream.

Never stop moving forward, sideways and up. Never stop exploring and NEVER think you can't... because guess what, YOU CAN.
The question is… will you?

After taking the past week to recalibrate and incorporate the energy of my trip into my life here in the city, I finally feel ready to share some of what surrounded me in the Mountains. Thank you to Amy for unleashing the wild within me and reminding me that beauty is EVERYWHERE. Amy is a ridiculously talented photographer. I am so lucky to be her muse from time to time, and her mine.

MEXICO: PART I

Looking back, every moment of our quick little hop over to Mexico plays like a scene from one of those highly addictive, lovable dark comedies starring two hilariously witty, super stylish best friends surrounded by a supporting cast of charming, downright weird, twisted characters. I am currently suffering from beach, ocean, and Greg withdrawal.

As this was my first time staying at an all-inclusive resort, my reactions to EVERYTHING were, apparently, quite entertaining. A whole lot of “…wait - let me get this straight, this is all free?”  and many unnecessary return trips to the dessert table.

Here are the top 7 - very important - things I learned about resort vacationing:

1. There is no such thing as a 5-star all-inclusive resort
Make peace with that and you’re good to go. Let go of your expectations. This is not the Four Seasons.

2. For the best experience (and attention) book PLATINUM.
Bonus: if you are childless, stay on the ADULTS ONLY side of the resort.
This is imperative! It made a world of different for us versus ‘them’. Think added extras like, free room service, private concierge, private adults only beach, private platinum lounge & pool… and premium alcohol.

3. Explore the grounds
Get the lay of the land as soon as you get there. Explore, ask questions and don’t be shy about it. If we had found out about our secluded, unreal, private platinum lounge on day 5 I would have been gutted.

4. Travel Light
DO NOT check a bag. You will avoid so much anxiety and save so much time (aka you will be on the beach faster). I did exceptionally well this trip. On top of The Essentials, I wore almost everything in my suitcase, which was very little considering it is the beach.

5. Protect your precious skin
I was born a sun worshipper. I have that skin that just tans instantly. Up until my mid-twenties, I seriously thought sunscreen was an unnecessary space waster in my cosmetic bag. My how things have changed. Between the delicate, weakening ozone layer, the intensity of the sun and your own vanity – wear sunblock: minimum 40 SPF for face, minimum 30 SPF for body. Trust me you will STILL be going home with that bronzed, sun kissed glow you were dreaming of all winter long.

6. RELAX
Let go of your strict workout routine and your rigid dietary guidelines from home and put down the non-fiction. Give yourself permission to exhale fully. Walk the beach and feel the sand between your toes. Read something light and entertaining. Sink into your lounge chair and listen to the best soundtrack on the planet: the waves.

7. Practice Gratitude
Whether you are on vacation to escape the winter cold, or to celebrate a birthday or wedding, take a moment (or two) for gratitude.
For the opportunity to travel, for the love of your travel companion(s), for the warm sun, your health, your strength, and your breath.
